Acupuncture

Acupuncture is considered to be one of the oldest medical practices in the world. The earliest written account of Acupuncture is found in the Nei Jing or the Yellow Emperors Classic of Internal Medicine. This document is believed to be the oldest comprehensive medical text in the world.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, disease may result from a disruption of the flow of qi or due to an imbalance between yin and yang aspects of our energetics. Yin may be described as withdrawn, cold, slow or inactive while yang may be described as external, hot, and active. When one of these components of our energetics are in excess or deficient, Acupuncture may facilitate the process of rebalancing the delicate relationship between these energies in our body by bringing us to a more centered place.

When treating with Acupuncture the practitioner may also observe the health and balance of the five elements Fire, Earth, Water, Wood and Metal. We are reflections and part of the natural world, always changing and evolving just as the seasons and the five elements adjust. Acupuncture may assist an individual on his or her journey to a more centered place within this flow of the five elements. While we may have a constitution that lends itself more towards one of the five elements we are always in flux and at times one element may stand out and need to be brought back into balance.

Treatments of Acupuncture stimulate acupoints along energy pathways or meridians. Each meridian or pathway relates to an internal organ. The insertion of fine needles into these points activate them and create an internal dialogue with other activated points. During treatment the movement of qi or energy rebalances the body's natural flow of energy, which often brings about a feeling of peace and well being.

Acupuncture may be effective in treating a wide range of complaints including stress, insomnia, migraines, back pain, arthritis, asthma, anxiety, depression as well a variety of debilitating and chronic conditions. Regular treatments have also been proven effective in the process of smoking cessation. The National Institute of Health has concluded that there is clear evidence that Acupuncture treatments are effective for post operative pain, side effects of chemotherapy, nausea of pregnancy, post operative pain and dental pain.
